The world of the 21st century has become one in which overwhelming scientific data supporting climate change as incontrovertible fact is denied and castigated as a fictional hoax by millions. That disconnect from normal is exactly the element which gave his plays their power. Working far outside the boundaries of dominant dramatic ideology of the 20th century, watching Ionesco’s characters was always an exercise in irony, satire and the ridiculous. Whether one loved or hated Eugene Ionesco’s flights of fancy, the one criticism never leveled against him was that he was trying to pass off irrational behavior as an example of realism. There was a time when the image of two old people filling up an empty stage with chairs supposedly filled with invisible guests truly skirted the boundaries of believable behavior even within the realm of Absurdism.
